Should Tottenham turn focus away from Europe?
In a season in which the Premier League title race is entirely open would it be a good tactical move for Tottenham to focus on the Premier League in order to get a jump on their rivals?
Tottenham didn’t strengthen their squad in the transfer market this summer. Now while that is less of a factor than people think due to some internal issues being resolved it is still something that a gentle eye should be kept on. The squad is slightly thinner than it is for the other title challengers and because of that Tottenham might be smart to choose their battle wisely.
Now, I’m not saying that it is what Tottenham should do but merely suggesting a line of thinking. It would make sense for Tottenham to sacrifice the current European campaign in a chase for their first title since 1960-61. It would be a glorious and historic streak to break and something that each and every player would very quickly become a legend in doing.
Spurs have the inherent advantage in the fact that their closest title rivals in Liverpool and Manchester City are both distracted by European competition and the North London club could use that to their benefit. With City having won the title last year and their owners focused on Europe it is not out of the realm of possibility that they as a club will be distracted.
Liverpool, however, are the other contender then and that is where Tottenham’s focus should be. The two clubs have similarly talented squads but the depth of Liverpool is greater due to their magnificent and bold summer of recruitment. The high talents though in the matchup belong to Spurs without a doubt and so if Tottenham pick their punches and duck and weave properly there’s no reason they can’t push to win the title in the end.
By sacrificing a European campaign and allowing their competition to trip at the hurdles provided by it Tottenham could very well go about doing something that full generations worth of supporters might think is impossible. At this point, it is beyond argument that there’s a domestic advantage to not having the distraction of European competition. Look at Chelsea under Antonio Conte for an example. They were remarkable for a lone single year and won the title. They then did not recruit the way that for instance Tottenham did not and then suffered in the league and Europe because of it.
Tottenham have the talent to make a historic difference in the clubs history but they may need to make some sacrifices in order to see it through.
