Three reasons Erik Lamela won’t leave Tottenham for Inter Milan
By Gary Pearson
Erik Lamela is a desirable commodity and Inter Milan have made it clear they want badly to lure the Argentinian away from North London this summer.
The allure of consistently cracking the first team at the San Siro will be hard for Lamela to discount. A regular spot in Mauricio Pochettino’s starting 11, with competition for places at an all-time high, is far more elusive. But Lamela’s future belongs with the Lilywhites and here’s three reasons why:
3. To be an part of something special
If everything goes according to plan, Spurs are on the verge of achieving something special. Whether that will come via winning the FA Cup, the Champions League or, in future seasons, the Premier League, there is a distinct feeling that this current Spurs’ contingent is destined for glory.
Pochettino’s long-term project is heating up nicely and promises to deliver as long as he can keep his core intact for forthcoming seasons.
The new stadium offers another benefit for Lamela, who feeds off playing on the biggest stage. This club is building toward a memorable crescendo and Lamela will forever regret any decision that keeps him from impending glory, especially after already persevering through the toughest times.
2. To fill his exceedingly high potential
The best is yet to come for Lamela. Now that he’s overcome a long-term debilitating hip injury, Lamela can concentrate on reaching his exceedingly high potential. Tottenham is the best place to do that. He’s playing under the tutelage of one of the world’s best developmental managers. In addition, the stiff competition is a perfect climate for eliciting the best response from players.
Competition breeds excellence. Going to Inter would offer Lamela a guaranteed starting spot but the chance of complacency setting in is far greater. Finally, playing against Premier League defences provides a greater physical challenge, another aspect that will improve his overall game.
1. Prove he belongs with the Premier League’s best
The inventive Argentinian still has something to prove in the Premier League. Injury has hampered severely his progress and he owes it to himself to stay the course. The worst is surely behind him and Lamela will want to prove that he is one of the most creative, special midfielders in the top flight. He is blessed with that sort of ability. The time has come for him to reinforce why he was touted so highly when he was brought to White Hart Lane in 2013.

Lamela’s current contract runs until 2020 but Spurs are entertaining the idea of offering an extension to the creative Argentinian.
His career would be best served by signing on the dotted line and remaining a Tottenham player during the prime of his career and beyond.
