Tottenham about to confirm Estuidantes’ Juan Foyth signing
By Gary Pearson
Tottenham are on the verge of landing Estuidantes defender Juan Foyth, which – when confirmed – will be the club’s second signing in short succession.
When it rains it usually pours, as Totenham can truly attest. Foyth, a day after the club confirmed that Davinson Sanchez is on route to North London, could be hot on the Colombian’s heels.
The Pochettino factor
Mauricio Pochettino has repeatedly assured Spurs’ faithful that more help is on the way. And Spurs’ gaffer rarely disappoints when he states something with such conviction. Foyth, who Tottenham HQ profiled five weeks ago, publicly pledged his desire to play for Pochettino.
It looks like he’s about to get his wish, with reliable reports trickling out of Le Plata all but confirming Foyth’s imminent North London arrival. With Tottenham’s transfer history replete with near misses, one can never count their chickens until the fat lady has utilized her soprano voice to bellow out a version of “When the Spurs go marching in.”
But there’s something palpably different about Pochettino’s reign. Wunderkinds, although the club has endured their fair share of transfer near misses during the current transfer period, want to play for the Argentinian maestro.
The gaffer’s reputation proceeds him and young, promising individuals know that to play under Pochettino means eventually reaching their full potential, through maximum growth and development.
Is another defender really necessary?
I won’t delve deeply into Foyth’s skill set. Click here if you want to read about his long list of attributes. Suffice to say, he’s vastly inexperienced and has the face of a pre-pubescent teen. But this 19-year-old can certainly play, partially evidenced by the short highlight package below.
If the deal is confirmed, it would be hard not to comment on the irony of the below video’s garish PSG branding.
Speaking of which, PSG were the other main players in the Foyth sweepstakes. Reports suggest that Spurs’ £10.5 million bid was accepted over PSG’s bids. Money, however, was not the decisive factor in these negotiations.
Instead, it was the youngster’s desire to play for Pochettino that, if confirmed, made all the difference.
The question on everyone’s mind is whether Spurs require another young center back, especially right after confirming the Sanchez deal. Too young and inexperienced to challenge for a spot in the first team, the 19-year-old will learn through osmosis and develop as a squad player under Pochettino’s teachings.

Plus, Sanchez is versatile enough to play at right back, where he has prior experience. Foyth needs time to mature and won’t immediately rustle any feathers. Tottenham could still use a natural right back and an offensive-minded asset, someone to lessen Harry Kane’s burden.
Two weeks, as these last two days has proven, is ample time to secure one or two more significant signings.
But for now, Tottenham fans can rest easy.
Pochettino knows what he is doing and will make sure his team is equipped with the depth and quality required to challenge for supremacy on all fronts.
