Tottenham 2 – 0 Arsenal

That win over Everton helped spark a run that created plenty of breathing room for Spurs in the final full month of the season. Though the math had yet to work itself out, it seemed clear that Pochettino’s boys would at least earn second — if not challenge for the title itself.

Even if that title chance seemed unlikely, there was still a symbolic triumph to be won. Arsenal’s chaotic Premier League season never found a way to correct itself — as it typically does — in the season’s final weeks. Arsene Wenger was under fire from every angle, and it seemed a very real risk that Arsenal would miss out on the Champions League for the first time in over a decade.

From Tottenham’s perspective, their match at the end of April held a much greater significance. It would be the last North London Derby played at the set-for-destruction White Hart Lane, but also it would ensure that Spurs finish above their local rivals for the first time in over 20 years.

Spurs, of course, had the chance to do the same on the final day of last season but managed to botch it up in humiliating style. Pochettino would not allow that to happen again, however.

In due order, Tottenham gripped hold of the match and declined to let go. The goals would take some time to get there, but within the span of three minutes from the 55th to the 58th minute, Spurs secured a two goal lead that they would not give up.

Tottenham would finish second thanks in part to those three points, while Arsenal would eventually miss the chance of Champions League play on the final match of the season. They would finish fifth, 11 points behind Tottenham.
