Tottenham 3 – 2 Everton

February saw Spurs enter into an uncharacteristic slump. Injuries to Rose and Jan Vertonghen forced a change of tactics, then a visit to Liverpool resulted in a 2-0 loss. Punch-drunk, Spurs failed to overcome lowly Gent in the Europa League’s first knockout round.

This was arguably the most important moment in Spurs’ season. There had been set-backs before, but with only three months left in the season it was vital that they re-discover their footing and soon.

Another 4-0 win over Stoke helped, but a bigger challenge lie ahead. Everton were in fine form, with Romelu Lukaku scoring at will and Ronald Koeman’s tactics finally gripping hold of the team. They would be a tricky team to beat, much less not lose to.

Spurs’ own pressing game proved too much for Everton to handle though. With so many men committed to the midfield, Spurs’ opportunities to win the ball back via tackle or interception were only increased. Kane would score twice before Dele put the match to bed thanks to an assist from Winks.

Everton would score twice in the final quarter of an hour, but it was too little too late from a team that was thoroughly out-classed by a once-again resurgent Tottenham side.
