Tottenham’s Eric Dier: We’ve Learned a Lot from Last Season
Tottenham midfielder/defender Eric Dier elaborated more on his post-match comments and why he expressed some mixed emotions after drawing with Manchester City.
Following Saturday’s 2-2 draw, Eric Dier showed mixed emotions.
He wasn’t mad about earning a point, but he was disappointed to start the game off as poorly as they did. And then, trail by two goals putting them in a precarious position.
To see Tottenham show resilience and character to come from behind and spoil a near-given win for Manchester City, is the perfect display of Spurs learning from last season’s performances to still pick up points despite falling behind in a match.
“I think we’ve learned a lot from last season,” Eric Dier told Spurs’ official website.
“It’s the same team. There is still a long way for us to go and we can still improve in many ways but we’re definitely on the right track, always wanting to improve, always fighting.”

“We lacked an aggression in our game [against Man City on Saturday] but we made up for it because we went 2-0 down and we fought back.”
“We never give up and that’s one character we have to have no matter how we’re playing. We just weren’t ourselves from the start, it’s only us to blame for that but we battled through it and managed to come out with a draw, which is fantastic.”
Watching Tottenham battle back to earn a crucial and important point on the road at the Etihad Stadium is reminiscent of their exploits last term where Spurs looked down and out but fought for a draw or win.
In nine different occasions a year ago Spurs picked up 18 points from a losing position. Five wins and three draws.
The most memorable result is of course Tottenham’s 2-1 away win over Man City when Christian Eriksen scored in the 83rd minute to clinch victory.
Nine minutes after Kelechi Iheanacho had equalized following a Harry Kane penalty in the 53rd minute.

Other good results include a 2-2 draw at the Liberty Stadium against Swansea City and a last minute winner over Watford on the road.
Ever since Mauricio Pochettino became manager two-and-a-half years ago, he began to change the club’s culture.
One particular change is instilling a belief that no matter what, Spurs can win or draw so long as they don’t give up when things look bleak.
On a side note, when Eric Dier was asked about Hugo Lloris’ two blunders at goal which directly led to Spurs’ trailing just before the hour mark, the 23-year-old decided to mention the many times that Lloris saved the team instead.
“I don’t even want to count the number of times the 10 players on the pitch have made a mistake and he’s saved us,” Dier added.
“It was our time to help him out and thankfully we did that because that’s what he deserves. I’ve said it before, for me, he’s the best goalkeeper in the Premier League and if he makes one mistake in three seasons, we’ll all take that!”

Indeed, mistakes will eventually happen and when a goalkeeper is rarely tested for long stretches of multiple games because of a dominating defense, then the errors that Lloris committed could be forgiven immediately.
