A meaningless cup

Though Tottenham of course will not be participating, there’s something quaint and vaguely exciting about the FA Community Shield.

Beyond being the first “real” competitive match of the season, it’s also presumably a chance for fans to see two of the better teams in the Premier League face off against each other. It’s also, therefore, a chance for Tottenham to get their first glimpses of the competition.

This year the two teams playing are, of course, Premier League champions Leicester City and FA Cup victors Manchester United. Both teams have done some fairly extensive refitting over the summer. The Foxes having to make up for the loss of N’Golo Kanté in midfield while also deepening the squad for Champions League obligations.

United have, of course, signed Zlatan Ibrahimovic. As if that weren’t enough, they also Henrikh Mkhitaryan, Eric Bailly and coach Jose Mourinho.

This could be a United side that finally reclaims some of Sir Alex Ferguson’s spark. For Leicester, this is the beginning of their chance to prove that last season wasn’t just a fluke and that they can remain title contenders going forward.

Tottenham fans will be, of course, hoping to watch the failure of both endeavors this season. And that all starts with the Community Shield on Sunday.
