5. 2-2 Draw Against Stoke

It may seem like ancient history now, but the 2-2 draw against Stoke City in match week two were two points dropped that really hurt Tottenham down the stretch.

Spurs played a strong match against United on opening weekend and were unlucky to come away empty handed. Stoke City at home looked to be redeeming the North Londoners very quickly. Eric Dier opened the scoring in the 19th minute and Chadli added to the lead in the 45th. Tottenham looked to be cruising to a win and showing that the previous week’s performance was a sign of things to come.

Shortly into the second half Stephen Ireland and Joselu were introduced to the match to give Stoke a more attacking outlook. It worked. Less than five minutes after being introduced Ireland was able to create a good chance, but Hugo Lloris was equal to the task.

Kane eventually comes off in the 64th minute to introduce Érik Lamela as Chadli became the lone striker and Mousa Dembélé assumes a more “number 10” position. Things would fall apart from there. In the 77th minute Tottenham give away a penalty that is converted by Marko Arnautovic, setting up a stressful final ten minutes. Just five minutes later Stoke had tied the game. It was a disappointing second half and a trend that would come all too often throughout the campaign: dropping points from winning positions.
