Nominees: Harry Kane (Tottenham), Dimitri Payet (West Ham), Odion Ighalo (Watford), Willian Borges da Silva (Chelsea), Mesut Özil (Arsenal)

2015 winner: Eden Hazard (Chelsea)

Why Harry Kane Could Win:

This season Harry Kane has already racked up 19 goals in 35 appearances in all competitions. In the Premier League, Kane has scored 16 goals after struggling to find the back of the net to begin the year.

But after 20 league games, the England striker is unstoppable and has helped Tottenham reach second in the Premiership. With his current pace, the 22-year-old is close to matching last season’s numbers of 21 league goals and 31 in all competitions with three months left to play.

His numbers and Spurs current form all but assures Harry Kane as a sure-fire lock to win the Premier League Player of the Year award with little competition from other nominees.

Why Harry Kane Won’t Win:

One player who could challenge Harry Kane is Mesut Özil.

The German attacking midfielder boasts 17 assists to go along with four goals in 31 appearances. While Özil hasn’t scored much this season, the 27-year-old is only three assists away from tying Thierry Henry’s assist record of 20 in the Premier League which the Frenchman set during the 2002-03 season.

Breaking the assist record would be huge as it has stood for 13 seasons. But that alone might not be enough to sway voters — or at least the majority of them — to stop voting for Harry Kane and watch him become a bigger star domestically and internationally.
