The latest transfer rumor involving Spurs… is about Andros Townsend. Again. If he was sold by now there would be no problems but…

By now this is a waste of time to report on a transfer rumor that hasn’t even been finalized. And for the most part, this probably won’t be settled anytime soon. So why continue following Andros Townsend’s supposed destinations to other clubs?

Because there’s minor updates here and there, that’s why.

So with that being said, here is the latest edition of the Andros Townsend Transfer Rumors.

Apparently it seems that leading up to tomorrow’s FA Cup third round replay against Leicester City at the King Power Stadium, Mauricio Pochettino was asked a question about Spurs’ out-of-favor winger Andros Townsend. So here’s what the Argentine manager had to say about the matter, taken from Chronicle Live:

“I am not involved in the negotiations, I am the head coach,” Pochettino said.

“It’s true that Andros is in a position where he doesn’t play too much for us but all players are involved in our squad. They only need to wait.”

“Andros has not played in the last few months and he wants to play. If some facility arrives [to leave] the decision is always from the club. Today it’s all about rumours, there’s nothing clear.”

At the very least, Mauricio Pochettino is honest in that he knows Andros Townsend hasn’t played in months and wants to play. But wanting to play and benching someone who’s better and in-form right now is two different things.

Therefore yes, Townsend has to wait. And although the FA Cup is a good time to see if the 24-year-old winger still has a future with the club (which seems doubtful with each passing day), Josh Onomah is proving to be another talented youth academy graduate on the current squad.

So it behooves Pochettino to give playing time to a 19-year-old who could have a bright future and a squad rotation role next season than someone who could be gone at the end of this month or during the summer.

More from Hotspur HQ

With regards to the high value of Andros Townsend and whether he is or isn’t worth £14 million. There are owners, chairmen, vice-presidents what have you, who put a certain value that they think their players are worth.

It’s not always right, or at market value. Case in point, Andros Townsend.

But it’s hard to argue with how Daniel Levy has conducted his transfer dealings when it comes to selling players. Seeing as how he was able to get just enough back and recoup his losses this past summer, to use elsewhere for further signings or to help increase some players’ current wages who deserve them.

Like Dele Alli who fully deserved an improved deal after the midway point in the 2015-16 season.

Here, look at it this way. Let’s say that both Andros Townsend and Federico Fazio are sold — which they should be — but what will Spurs do with that newfound money? Who do they sign? Should they sign anyone?

As is, Mauricio Pochettino has gone on record a few times and has expressed that he is happy with the current squad at his disposal. Sure there’s only one recognized striker on the team in Harry Kane. And yet that hasn’t stopped them so far this season.

There’s a possibility that more injuries might happen that could derail Spurs’ current campaign which would be gut-wrenching to watch, but there are players who can also be recalled on loan (Dominic Ball, center-back) or who could be promoted to add depth (Shaq Coulthrist, Shayon Harrison, Cameron Carter-Vickers and yes even Miloš Veljković).

Also, players can in fact play out of position. It has happened before, why can’t it happen again?

But the fact of the matter is this. Daniel Levy might not get what he wants, and that’s okay. Right now there isn’t any position where a new signing can come in and automatically start over any of the players who regularly make up Mauricio Pochettino’s starting eleven.

If they did, they would be expensive and most likely destroy the current dynamic in place at the moment. That, and the money might not even be worth it. So for now, Andros Townsend and Federico Fazio to a lesser extent, are still Spurs players and will continue to be Spurs players until clubs who are interested in both of them are willing to pay the appropriate value that has been listed.

If West Brom fans can point out and say ‘Saido Berahino isn’t leaving… not unless you pay £25 million.’ then what’s stopping Spurs from doing the same thing? You want Andros Townsend? Sure, for £14 million. Take it or leave it.

Oh and this probably isn’t the last time that both Townsend and Fazio will be mentioned again on Spurs’ Transfer Rumors. They’ll show up again soon.
