Spurs’ Transfer Rumors: Mauricio Pochettino Insists that Harry Kane Wants to Stay with Tottenham
What are the latest transfer rumors involving Spurs? Let’s find out.
The first transfer rumor story to read is Real Madrid trying to sign Harry Kane. Obviously that won’t even happen no matter how much money is thrown around. Gareth Bale was sold to Los Blancos because he wanted to move to Spain. Kane doesn’t want to leave Spurs. Period.
Up next, Andros Townsend will most likely be sold sooner or later, either this month or in the summer. But one team who won’t sign the England international is Sunderland due to a number of complications that partially involves Daniel Levy’s £10 million valuation of a winger who has yet to make his first Premier League start this season. And finally, there’s a follow-up story regarding Harry Winks and being linked to a trio of Championship clubs from yesterday’s Spurs’ Transfer Rumors. Time to get to these stories below.

With Harry Kane’s trajectory from a talented but complete unknown youth prospect to becoming arguably one of the best young strikers in the world today. It’s not surprising to see a football club who is known for signing some of the world’s best players, trying to sign Tottenham’s own star striker.
Yes, Real Madrid has identified that Harry Kane is a “Galáctico” which in Spanish means Galactic or in other words, superstar. But see, Kane has continuously said time and time again that he’s Tottenham Hotspur through and through. He’s been a supporter since he was little, and when he signed with Spurs as an 11-year-old he has never thought of leaving the club.
Even Mauricio Pochettino insists that Kane wants to remain with Spurs.
“I didn’t see the rumour but it doesn’t surprise me,” Pochettino said. “Harry Kane is one of the best strikers in Europe or in the world.”
“It would not surprise me if some big clubs are interested in him but it’s only a rumour. He is not for sale and the good thing is Harry wants to stay with us, this is the most important thing.”
“Sometimes a manager can say a player is not for sale but if the player wants to leave there are a lot of examples when it happens. But in this case the good thing is Tottenham do not want to sell him and Harry Kane wants to stay with us.”
- Andros Townsend isn’t a priority for Sunderland in January
- [via Sunderland Echo]
Because Daniel Levy wants at least £10 million for a 24-year-old winger who has yet to start a Premier League game this season, this makes it difficult for teams to consider signing Andros Townsend this month. But if Sunderland even wanted to approach a loan deal for the England international, it wouldn’t even be possible due to the Black Cats already having DeAndre Yedlin on loan.
In order for Sam Allardyce to consider bringing in a player who has been phased out of Spurs’ first-team setup, Sunderland would first have to terminate Yedlin’s loan deal in order to bring Townsend on loan. Or, the Black Cats could try to come up with at least £10 million to complete a permanent transfer instead.

But according to Chris Young, none of this is actually going to happen as Sunderland don’t see Townsend as a priority due to what the club has to deal with right now:
“As reported by the Echo, Sunderland’s priorities for the remainder of the transfer window are thought to be a new centre-forward and a right-back, even though there are already three senior players on the books in the latter position.”
“Sunderland could look to strengthen in other positions towards the end of the window, but that is expected to depend on how many players the Black Cats can offload.”
“The club are already on the limits of the wage budget set by the Premier League and need to offload those considered surplus to requirements.”
Had DeAndre Yedlin not be on loan with the Black Cats, Sunderland could have gone for a loan deal, except Tottenham are seeking a permanent transfer instead. So basically, Sunderland are seriously out of the running for the England international even if they were interested in the 24-year-old to begin with.
- Bristol City are contemplating a move for Harry Winks
- [via Bristol Post]
This is a continuation from yesterday’s Spurs’ Transfer Rumors when Harry Winks was linked to a trio of clubs, one of them being Bristol City. The other two are MK Dons (a likely favorite due to the Dele Alli transfer) and Blackburn Rovers.
But Mauricio Pochettino has opted to not let the 19-year-old central midfielder leave as the Christmas and New Year’s holiday period is generally the toughest part of the Premier League season on a yearly basis. So it makes sense to keep as many players as you can for rotational purposes.
That being said though, Winks has only featured once with the first-team and that was during Tottenham’s 3-1 win over Qarabağ FK in the Europa League. And with plenty of players ahead of him in the pecking order, a loan move will help both Harry Winks and Spurs in the long run.

Because MK Dons are a potential destination with their interests in the 19-year-old English midfielder, Harry Winks could get at least half of a season’s worth of starts due to the recent Dele Alli transaction that benefited both clubs last winter.
Now assuming that Winks goes to the Dons and does well, he would be able to come back and be able to compete with Dele Alli, Mousa Dembélé, Tom Carroll and Ryan Mason for playing time. Of course, Harry Winks would still be down the pecking order still, but he will have a better shot than he does now. Unless some changes are made whether that’s selling a couple of players or moving them to different positions instead right now.
