Leading up to Tottenham Hotspur’s Boxing Day fixture against Norwich City, they had to score first to put pressure on the Canaries. In the end, they ended up scoring three goals and leaving White Hart Lane with a win and three points.

Tottenham have maintained their consistent presence in front of the net by scoring a goal in the 26th minute off of a Harry Kane penalty kick to give Spurs an early 1-0. With a 42nd minute strike by Harry Kane, that not only gave him a brace on the day but it pushed Spurs’ lead to 2-0 over Norwich with three minutes before half-time.

Tottenham have done well to score early and their goal in the 26th minute is the team’s third goal between the time frame of 16 through 30 minutes. Spurs’ 42nd minute goal adds to their current home tally of scoring a goal between the 31st and 45th minute up to six goals. This means Tottenham are more likely to score just before half-time.

Besides scoring first and just before the break, Spurs don’t concede goals right before half-time. In fact they’ve only given up one goal in the first half when they’re playing in White Hart Lane. Here are the stats below:

Tottenham’s goals per 15 mins (between 16-30 mins):

Goals For = 3 goals scored
Goals Against = 1 goal conceded

Tottenham’s goals per 15 mins (between 31-45 mins):

Goals For = 6 goals scored
Goals Against = 0 goals conceded

When Tom Carroll added the team’s third goal in the 80th minute, this increased Tottenham’s goals scored between the 76th and 90th minutes, up to four. Thankfully, Norwich City were held scoreless because Spurs have conceded a whopping five goals late in games, to make things interesting.

Tottenham’s goals per 15 mins (between 76-90 mins):

Goals For = 4 goals scored
Goals Against = 5 goals conceded

And, lastly, with Tottenham scoring at least one goal, they have managed to score a goal at home for the seventh time this season in 10 home fixtures.

Spurs’ goals scored at home against opponents:

Stoke City | 2 — 2 (Drew)
Crystal Palace | 1 — 0 (Won)
Manchester City | 4 — 1 (Won)
Aston Villa | 3 — 1 (Won)
West Ham United | 4 — 1 (Won)
Newcastle United | 1 — 2 (Lost)
Norwich City | 3 — 0 (Won)
Overall record when Tottenham scores at home: 5W-1D-1L

The five goals conceded late in games could be a sign of lost concentration. Tottenham for the most part tend to be winning heading into half-time and/or leading after the break when they’re in the confines of White Hart Lane.

Plus when you factor in how Spurs are constantly high-pressing their opponents and then quickly turning up field for counterattacks. They’ll eventually slow down near the end of a game and thus let their opponents come back.

As for Norwich City, they have continued their streak to concede at least one goal in all of their away games this season — which is 10. Letting goals in will hurt any team, not just the Canaries.

However, it doesn’t help when Norwich’s track record of giving their opponents the lead is high. Not to mention their inability to lead heading into halftime is awful and generally just conceding first all the time will make games difficult for them. It’s almost a miracle that the Canaries aren’t in the relegation zone yet. Or back there right now.

Norwich City’s track record of goals conceded (away):

  • Opponents score first 70% of the time in Norwich’s 10 away matches
  • Norwich have conceded the lead 90% of the time in 10 away games
  • Norwich have trailed four times on the road at half-time, all ended in a loss
  • Norwich City trail in away games 29.5 minutes on average
  • If the Canaries concede at least one goal, they’ve lost every single game once
  • Norwich have failed to score 40% of the time on the road

Overall, it’s not a pretty sight for Norwich City when they had to go against an in-form Tottenham who, despite losing to Newcastle United, looked hard to beat whether they were on the road or at home. It also didn’t help that Norwich have failed to score in three out of their past four away games. After they started the year out by scoring at least one away goal in their first six road games.

Now, granted scoring sometimes doesn’t translate to a win as the Canaries have witnessed all three results when they scored a goal on the road. But not scoring obviously makes it hard to even win a game.

Norwich City’s results after scoring in their first six away games:

Sunderland | 3 — 1 (Won)
Liverpool | 1 — 1 (Drew)
West Ham United | 2 — 2 (Drew)
Newcastle United | 6 — 2 (Lost)
Manchester City | 2 — 1 (Lost)
Overall record through their first six road games: 1W-2D-2L

At the very least for the Canaries, the reverse fixture is set to take place on February 2nd, barring any changes due to Tottenham’s Europa League and FA Cup commitments. Will there be a possibility that both teams look different with the winter transfer window set to open very soon? Possibly, but at the same time, if you’re riding a winning streak or suffering through a winless streak. Those don’t stop overnight, they continue for quite a while.

Tottenham may be the visitors heading into Carrow Road the next time Spurs and Norwich play for the second and final time in the Premier League this season. But the Canaries only have a slightly better shot of winning at home than they do on the road — against any opponent.
