Which Lower League Players Could Tottenham Sign in January?
Rico Henry, Left-back
Age: 18
Current Club: Walsall (League One)
Current season (all competitions):
- Walsall: 21 appearances, 2 goals, 2 assists, 1,742 minutes
Spurs players at his position: Ben Davies, Danny Rose
Just like Ben Chilwell before him, Rico Henry would be another left-back option for Tottenham. This doesn’t mean that Danny Rose will be sold or that Ben Davies isn’t good enough to become Rose’s backup. Rather, this is all about looking ahead to the future. And even though Spurs have youth academy players who play left-back if they’re able to sign someone who’s more ready, why not sign them?
Taking away the “next Ashley Cole” comparisons, when Tottenham were reported to be interested in Rico Henry, a Spurs insider was quoted as saying: “Henry is perfect for the Spurs side that Mauricio Pochettino wants to build – and the lad can play left midfield as well so has real versatility. It’s going to be a question of the right price because everyone is watching the situation carefully.”
With Henry already agreeing to a new five-year deal back in October, a big money transfer will be the only way to pry the left-back from Walsall. How much depends on what Walsall deems sufficient.
