Former club: Netherlands national team
Current club: Manchester United
Current club stats: 71 matches, 36 wins, 18 draws, 17 losses (in all competitions)

Okay so, no, this isn’t a player rumor. At the time that rumors were swirling about Louis Van Gaal coming to Tottenham however, it seemed to be just about as important. Van Gaal was a world class coach, having previously been with both Barcelona and Bayern Munich. If Tottenham would be his next destination following the completion of his duties with the Netherlands national team in the 2014 World Cup, it would have been a coup of the highest order.

After a surprisingly successful World Cup where the Netherlands finished third behind Germany and Argentina, Van Gaal’s ambitions grew at pace with his stature. He came back from Brazil as the presumptive next Manchester United manager, and took up his position at Old Trafford shortly thereafter.

In truth, this was almost undoubtedly better for Tottenham. The club would eventually select Mauricio Pochettino, a manager who continues to impress after a year and a half on the job. Van Gaal, in contrast, is in danger of losing his job at United after a prolonged series of sterile performances. It’s safe to assume that many United fans might be looking at Pochettino – Tottenham’s consolation choice after Van Gaal – with no small amount of envy.
