Tottenham Hotspur Links: Where Should Andros Townsend Go?
An early afternoon Tottenham Hotspur Links is here to entertain you.
What Hotspur HQ has for everyone to read today are transfer rumors. It’s a transfer rumor roundup involving Tottenham’s very own Andros Townsend. And an unlikely bid for Newcastle United striker Ayoze Perez. So let’s jump right into the rumors.
- Three possible destinations Tottenham could sell Andros Townsend in January
- [via Bleacher Report]
Sunderland — When Andros Townsend came on as a substitute for Son Heung-min in the 62nd minute, the 24-year-old Townsend played for nearly an hour. That substitution appearance worked very well for him and Mauricio Pochettino. Townsend played a very smart and simple game against Sunderland, linking up well with his teammates. But since that game, Sam Allardyce has replaced Dick Advocaat and Allardyce might want to focus on the team’s defense than upgrading the offense for the time being. Going with a defense-first approach could help Sunderland.

Swansea City — Despite Andros Townsend’s tendency to be overly direct with his style of play, Garry Monk might want to sign the right winger to help fill the void left by Nathan Dyer’s transfer to Leicester City. It’s a big risk to take as Townsend tends to do his own things rather than linkup with teammates. But he could be of some help.
West Bromwich Albion — Tony Pulis’ side has scored 10 goals this season which is tied for the least among all 20 Premier League clubs (Aston Villa and Stoke City also have 10 goals). Even with players like Saido Berahino, James McClean, Salomon Rondon and Stephane Sesseegnon, West Brom might still be interested in adding Andros Townsend to help out. The only issue would be two previous failed moves involving Federico Fazio and Saido Berahino, so this move might not happen.
Being able to swap an under utilized right winger for an under utilized striker would be a smart move. Érik Lamela has fully established himself as Mauricio Pochettino’s starting right midfielder, and once Clinton N’Jie is fit, he will slot into the backup role. Mauricio Pochettino has three other options to be Lamela’s backup if needed: Son Heung-min, Mousa Dembélé and Tom Carroll.

Getting Leicester City striker Andrej Kramaric in return wouldn’t help just yet, he’ll be Harry Kane’s backup, but this is move will let Pochettino rest Kane during Europa League and FA Cup games.
Before moving to the Foxes this past January, the Croatian striker had scored 55 goals in 64 matches with HNK Rijeka, his previous club.
This season, in only 19 appearances in all competitions since his transfer to Leicester, Kramaric has scored four goals. That’s pretty good considering that Jamie Vardy has scored the majority of the Foxes’ goals this season. A player swap involving Andros Townsend for Andrej Kramaric would be a good move for both clubs.
Since completing a £2 million move from Tenerife to Newcastle United in last summer’s transfer window, the Spanish striker has scored 10 goals for the Magpies, three goals this season. The Sports Mole reports that Tottenham will go into a bidding war with Manchester United and bid £12 million. Real Madrid are apparently long-term admirers of the 22-year-old, so it could be a three-way bidding war soon.

In general, Spurs tend to not do good (read as: lose plenty) of bidding wars between clubs due to the sole fact that they weren’t able to grant Champions League football. That might change depending on the club’s form heading into January and how the rest of the Premier League shapes up this winter. At the same time though, Ayoze Perez has stated that he feels at home with Newcastle United and the club will do whatever it takes to keep him, meaning this is an unlikely transfer for Spurs.
