January Could Be a Quiet Month for Tottenham Hotspur
Tottenham Hotspur might be busy doing nothing once the winter transfer window opens in January.
The winter transfer window is just a little over two months away, but rumors are starting to run rampant. News between online publications and social media are gathering quickly in hopes of stirring the pot, so to speak. It’s all fair game — they are rumors — but here’s where things will get interesting. The January transfer window will be a very quiet time for Tottenham once again.
It would seem unfathomable to think, because of this elephant in the room (the striker position) but it’s not. Mauricio Pochettino, Paul Mitchell and Daniel Levy all know what’s best for this club and that’s to keep the team together for as long as possible. Easier said than done of course, but this summer was a small glimpse of how this new partnership is bearing fruit already.
Harry Kane and Hugo Lloris were never going to leave. Not to a Premier League club and not for as high as £40-50 million for Kane alone. Érik Lamela wasn’t going to be sold despite not living up to his high expectations placed on supporters and the enormous transfer fee above his head. Mousa Dembélé wasn’t going to be left behind in the 25-man squad even though he was a good super sub to have last season.
While it would be nice to see new additions coming into the fold, is it really needed?
POPULAR: Why Tottenham Didn’t Address Two Key Positions This Summer
Stop and think about it clearly before answering. Looking up and down the roster, does this team honestly need a couple of players to challenge for that coveted fourth place spot in the Premier League? Will a new signing — or more — be the difference between winning the Europa League and FA Cup or suffering an early exit?
This is the same exact team that managed a fifth place finish a year ago, minus youth players coming in and a couple signings being added. Missing out on a Champions League berth by six points in the 2014-15 Premier League season by a mere two games was an early sign that Tottenham didn’t need that much change.

During this 2015-16 season? For the longest time, Toby Alderweireld was the only starter who wasn’t on the team from a year ago. Heung-Min Son and Dele Alli have since joined Alderweireld in Pochettino’s starting eleven as new signings.
With Son injured or not, Spurs only introduced three new starters. Can another player in the winter transfer window crack into the lineup and replace someone else?
Let’s not forget, this team has been able to withstand numerous injuries already to key players and have maintained an unbeaten streak in the Premier League, even if some of those games were draws and not wins. The depth was there thanks in large part to youth players who were promoted and everyone doing a great job to keep the team afloat in all competitions until players were able to come back and get into form again.
In general there are plenty of players on hand for Mauricio Pochettino to pick from, out of 24 players available — injuries notwithstanding of course. If there will be news regarding Tottenham, in the winter transfer window. It’ll be moves for players leaving more than coming in. Federico Fazio may or may not be sold. Andros Townsend and Alex Pritchard may or may not be loaned.
Having another quiet January isn’t bad, Tottenham doesn’t need to keep signing players unless they are able to push for a starting spot and provide great depth and backup appeal. If not, then Spurs shouldn’t bother until the summer, where new players have the benefit of a pre-season to get acclimated faster.
