5. Kevin Wimmer

Austria international Kevin Wimmer’s numbers don’t exactly burst off the page. Without seeing him play he looks just about how you’d imagine a mid-table Bundesliga defender to look. Not a put down, but not the highest praise either.

Watch his game, though, and you see a more impressive player.

At 6’2 he cuts an imposing figure. That he can pair that height was a good deal of pace makes his skillset at centre-back pretty unique. The best current analogue on the Tottenham roster might be Jan Vertonghen. They’re both left-footed and both ideal mobile centre-backs, tracking runners as they try to break through offside traps. The lightness of foot might also make him perfect for the high press with which Tottenham often play.

At only 22, Wimmer has a tremendous amount of upside and is still capable of being molded to fit into Pochettino’s style of play. He might not become a permanent fixture in Tottenham’s ranks soon, but we can expect him to challenge for Vertonghen’s place throughout the season.
