Which Position Should Spurs Improve More?
Signing a Defensive Midfielder
Through two games, Eric Dier has played well even if he’s playing out of position for the second time in back-to-back seasons. With the center-back position stacked following the signings of Kevin Wimmer and Toby Alderweireld he would become a backup option once again. However accepting a new role that he’s learning on the fly is beneficial, as it ensures him to get regular minutes and increases his value.
With Nabil Bentaleb doing good last season but struggling this year for reasons unknown, there’s an apparent need for a new defensive midfielder. Ryan Mason up the pitch as a central mid and his partnership with Eric Dier was very good against Stoke City. However, pairing Mason up with a true holding mid would be better.

This gives Pochettino more defensive cover in front of the back four, it allows Eric Dier to learn from a veteran and most importantly. It doesn’t allow Nabil Bentaleb to come on late as a sub, only to mess up horribly. One rumored target was Borussia Dortmund’s Sven Bender. At 26-years-old Bender has the veteran experience that Mauricio Pochettino wants, but his injuries are a major concern if signed. It doesn’t help that Thmoas Tuchel values Bender for this season.
