Martin Chivers As winners of the League Cup in 1972-73 season, Spurs European adventure in the UEFA Cup continued with a comfortable win over FC Cologne. Bill Nicholson’s team had already disposed of Grasshopper Zurich, Aberdeen, and Dinamo Tbilisi in the earlier rounds. In the away leg they set themselves up to progress to the semi-finals with a 2 – 1 win in Germany thanks to goals from Chris McGrath and Martin Peters, the latter scoring the winner with 15 minutes to play.
At White Hart Lane, Tottenham ensured that there were no slip ups and increased their aggregate lead with two goals in the opening 15 minutes. Left-back, Terry Naylor set up the first with a cross for Martin Chivers. The centre-forward flicked the ball to a defender who returned it to him, so Chivers hammered in the first on 11 minutes. Four minutes later, Chivers then turned creator heading on a cross for Ralph Coates to head in the second. Early in the second half, Chivers set up a third goal for Martin Peters.
The semi-final tie saw them drawn to play East German opponents, 1.FC Lokomotiv Leipzig.
