22nd September 1971 Tottenham Defeat Torino to Win Anglo-Italian Cup
By Logan Holmes
As League Cup winners in 1970-71, Tottenham qualified for the UEFA Cup. They also had to play the winners of the Italian League Cup over two legs for the Anglo-Italian Cup. Spurs had travelled to Italy to play Torino in the first leg three weeks earlier and gained a single goal advantage, scored by Martin Chivers after an hour. The goal was created by Steve Perryman with a burst down the right and a cross which Chivers met perfectly.

Totenham Hotspur 2 Torino 0 [Agg. Won 3 – 0]
Scorers: Chivers, Gilzean
Tottenham dominated the second leg and ensured they claimed the trophy with goals from Chivers and Alan Gilzean. Although the competition had little relevance in terms of European silverware the match was seen as a good opportunity for the players to experience playing against foreign opposition in readiness for the more serious UEFA Cup opponents who would lie ahead. The attendance for the match at White Hart Lane was 34,103. A full strength team turned out for both games with only one change from the first leg, Cyril Knowles returning in place of Tony Want who had deputised at left back for a number of games while he was injured. It was the team which at the end of the season would lift the UEFA Cup for the first time.
Team: Jennings; Kinnear, Knowles; Mullery, England, Beal; Gilzean, Perryman, Chivers, Peters, Coates.
