In the 1960s clubs preseason match preparation was much less intensive than nowadays. In 1965 Tottenham were invited to participate in a mini-tournament in Spain. The Costa del Sol Trophy was played over two days in Malaga and involved four teams.
In 1965 Spurs defeated Valencia 2 – 1 in the first match, Eddie Clayton and Cliff Jones scoring the goals. In the Final the following day, 15th August, an Alan Mullery scored the only goal of the game to secure victory over Standard Liege.
The following year, 1966, Tottenham returned to Spain to defend their trophy and defeated Malaga in the opening match. The two Alans, Gilzean and Mullery scored the goals in a 2 – 1 win. Spurs played Benefica in the Final on 15th August, and 2 – 1 and on this occasion, the two Jimmys scored – Greaves and Robertson.
The Costa del Sol Trophy was extremely large, being over four feet tall and valued then at £1,200. On being asked to receive the trophy, Jimmy Greaves, as Spurs’ captain summoned up all the decorum his position afforded him and retorted, “”I’m not picking that ***** thing up – I’ll kill myself.’
