Pat Jennings: Tottenham Legend – Video

Pat Jennings is a true Tottenham Legend. The Northern Ireland international joined Spurs in 1964 and after taking two season to settle in, from 1966 until his premature departure from White Hart Lane in 1977, he was unchallenged as Tottenham’s first choice goalkeeper.

For many Tottenham supporters, Pat Jennings is undoubtedly Spurs best ever goalkeeper. Since the departure of Jennings, Tottenham have not had a goalkeeper capable of reaching the standards set by Jennings in the 1960s and 70s. Hugo Lloris is an outstanding goalkeeper and could with time come close to the goalkeeping feats achieved by Jennings.

Jennings joined Tottenham from Watford in the summer of 1964, having signed from Newry Town (now City) the previous season. He went straight into the Spurs team at the start of the 1964-65 season, replacing another legendary goalkeeper, the Scotland international, Bill Brown. His debut was in a 2 – 0 win at White Hart Lane against Sheffield United.

It took Jennings tine to adjust to the pressure of the 1st Division and midway through the season Brown reclaimed his place in the team. The following season Brown remained in the side but Jennings took over after a couple of months only for Brown to finish the season as first choice. At the start of the 1966-67 season, Bill Nicholson opted for Jennings which saw the departure of Brown to Northampton Town the following October.

More from Tottenham News

Jennings was the first name on the team sheet for the next 11 seasons and it was an unfortunate and incorrect decision by Keith Burkinshaw to allow Jennings to leave at the end of the season in which Spurs were relegated. That Jennings moved to Arsenal made it even worse as he went on to play at Highbury for the next 8 seasons.

He returned to Tottenham at the end of his career as he looked to retain his fitness for the 1986 World Cup Finals in Mexico. He has remained a Tottenham favourite and Legend working as a goalkeeping coach and consultant and continues in the hospitality lounges at White Hart Lane.
