Tottenham: Player ratings from Spurs 0-1 Carabao Cup win over Burnley
By Aaron Coe
Rating the Tottenham defence
Tottenham managed to get a clean sheet and really limit the clear-cut opportunities Burnley had on goal. It was not a picturesque performance but they got the job done.
Ben Davies – Left fullback
Ben Davies was back in the side after sitting behind Sergio Reguilon at the weekend. Davies was under a bit of pressure in the first half as Connor Roberts and Johann Gudmundsson kept pushing forward. However, Davies hung tough and after some wobbles early in the match ended up conceding very little. 6.5
Davinson Sanchez – Left center-half
Davinson Sanchez was paired with Cristian Romero in the back, playing on the left side of the center-half pairing. Sanchez is not always comfortable on the left side and at times shied away from using his left foot. Davinson had a huge block/clearance in the second half to help keep Burnley from getting a good shot on target. Could push Eric Dier with more solid outings. 7.5
Cristian Romero – Right center-half
Cristian Romero started again for Spurs and it is not hard to see why. Romero is calm on the ball and rarely caught out of position. Cuti did commit a poor foul early that put Spurs under unnecessary pressure with a free-kick. Romero still needs to work on his passing but his calm on the ball is important for the team. 7.5
Emerson Royal – Right fullback
Emerson Royal started at fullback and did his job defensively but was probably as active as a right-winger as he was a right fullback. Royal had a crucial clearance of an excellent Gudmundsson cross in the first half, showing he is alert to what is happening. Emerson hit a couple of solid crosses in the match including the one that connected with Lucas for the game-winner. Most importantly Emerson was only on the turf maybe three times the entire match and on none of the occasions was he rolling in agony. He is learning and growing in front of our eyes. 8
Pierluigi Gollini – Goalkeeper
Pierluigi Gollini finally got his first clean sheet as a member of Tottenham Hotspur. Gollini was not particularly busy although he did manage to save the one shot on goal Burnley could muster. Gollini was quick off his line in the first half and did okay with his distribution. A good match for the Italian keeper. 7
