Matches Good and Bad

It was a mixed afternoon for the rest of the Tottenham international participants, as there were blowouts all around. After playing most of Spain’s initial friendly match at the Netherlands and then playing all of the Nations League game at Switzerland, Sergio Reguilon was actually left out of the Spanish side completely for their match with Germany.

Spain ultimately thrashed Germany, so I have little doubt Sergio enjoyed the game, but frankly, he probably need the rest and it is okay to sit out a few now and then. Someone who did not need any rest was Davinson Sanchez. Well as a new father he maybe did need some rest, but it was not the on the football pitch kind of rest.

Sanchez missed a lousy result earlier in the week as Columbia lost at home to Uruguay 0-3. Unfortunately for Davinson he did play versus Ecuador and things went from bad to worse for Columbia. Ecuador were up 2-0 before 10 minutes had expired and Columbia were only an extra time penalty for James Rodriguez away from being down 4-0 at half, instead of 4-1. Columbia went up by 1 man shortly after conceding the fifth goal, but still gave up a sixth even with an extra man. Overall, it was a day to forget after a week Sanchez will never forget.

One player who had a week to remember was Giovani Lo Celso, who for the second match running had an assist for Argentina. Lo Celso got the ball attacking down the left flank and dribble to near the end line. Then Gio cut the ball back and hit an outside of the right foot pass into Nicolas Gonzalez who took a touch and riffled home for the 1-0 Argentina lead, just 17 minutes into the match. Les Bleus would score one more and then cruise to the 2-0 win over Peru, leaving Argentina second in World Cup qualifying for CONMEBOL on 10 points, two points behind Brazil after 4 games played.

Oliver Skipp was on the right side of the ledger for the England U-21 team as they handily beat Albania 5-0. Several of the goals were down to poor keeping for Albania, but the goal Skipp assisted on was a beautiful one-touch one-two combination from Skipp to Jamal Musiala. If you watch the video the assist is at about 2:08 in.

From here the lads are all headed back to N17, except Skipp who is headed back to Norwich to continue a thus far productive loan. With a big game starting a big stretch for Spurs, it is good that all these players made it through unscathed and hopefully ready for the road ahead.
