Tottenham have jumped in at the last minute and, according to the Guardian, pipped West Ham at the line to secure Gedson Fernandes on loan.

The problem is that the jury is still out on whether he can make an immediate impact on the scene. Regardless, the 21-year-old has an abundance of talent and, if signed permanently, will be a major factor in the future.

However one has to wonder where Spurs immediate first team reinforcements are coming from. Trying not to be the pessimist, I find it hard to see Fernandes as the immediate solution to our woes.

But pipping West Ham, no matter the circumstance, is a good thing. And Fernandes certainly knows how to play. But, if the signing is confirmed, he’s yet another player for the future. He is not somebody that is going to come in and improve immediately our results, which is the more pressing concern at Tottenham.

Fernandes preferred Tottenham due to his agent’s historic link with Jose Mourinho. Jorge Mendes, Fernandes’ agent, had previous dealings with the Portuguese gaffer and must have convinced the midfielder to pledge his short-term allegiance to the north London club. While it will be a big moment for Spurs, the prospective signing will barely whet supporters’ whistles.

Experienced, wily midfielders are in demand at Hotspur Way. But most people think Daniel Levy won’t open his pocket-book to provide the funds Spurs need to secure big-money signings in January. So players like Fernandes will have to do, to our chagrin.

I’m not bemoaning signing such a wonderful prospect for the future. What I’m bemoaning is the fact that he’s for the future and not now, precisely when we need the most help.
