Harry Kane scores 100th Tottenham goal on Merseyside, Spurs lead 2-0

Harry Kane, in the first match of September, has scored his 100th Tottenham goal to open Spurs’ first-half account on Merseyside.

Kane’s first goal of the Premier League season came off an attempted cross. But Spurs’ frontman won’t care how the ball found its way past Tom Heaton. After a frustrating August, Kane will be elated to get off the mark in the 2017-18 campaign.

A scoreless August wasn’t for lack of trying, as Kane deserved better in the barren month. He had multiple scoring chances in the season opener and hit the post flush against Chelsea on Match Day 2. The 25-year-old did everything but score against Burnley last time out at Wembley, so this moment is long overdue.

Kane scored a brace against a resilient, albeit lacklustre, Maltese side on opening day of September. And it looks like the marksman is carrying on where he left off during England duty. Kane was trying to whip the ball to the back post but his cross caught Heaton off cheating, the ball flying over the flat-footed keeper to give Spurs a warranted lead.

Christian Eriksen has since doubled Spurs’ advantage thanks to a Heaton rebound. Dele Alli’s enterprising run handed his team the impetus. Alli then found Ben Davies with his resulting back-post cross. Davies whipped a cross back across the face of goal, allowing Eriksen to pounce on Heaton’s parried rebound.

Kane and Alli could have put the match to bed in the final minutes of the first half, but failed to capitalize on sloppy Everton defending.

Tottenham look poised at the break to extend their unbeaten streak against Everton to 10 games.
