8. Jermain Defoe (first stint)

Stats: 139 appearances, 43 goals, 6 assists

Defoe was one of a few players – curiously all strikers – who began the century at Tottenham, left for other clubs but eventually found themselves back in north London. The English striker’s first stint at the club was precocious, if not especially prolific.

David Pleat, manager of the club when Defoe signed from West Ham, had especially high hopes for the pacey and versatile striker. He repaid the confidence shown in him with goals and loyalty. His second stint with the club was, if anything, more prolific than the first.
