Harry Redknapp needed a bulldog in central midfield, and he found it in Scott Parker. And he got him at a bargain basement price considering what the Englishman later did for Tottenham.
The former Newcastle and West Ham veteran slipped right into Tottenham’s starting XI, aggressively patrolling the center of the pitch in an old English style of football that somehow still fit well with the club’s continental aspirations. His tackles, tight marking and leadership helped propel Tottenham to as-yet-unreached heights, and he did it all whilst looking like he just stepped out of a time machine from 1955.
Both Redknapp and later Villas-Boas found a need for Parker’s no frills take on the game, and he was successfully utilized in Tottenham’s fourth place finish in 2012 and their Premier League record points total the year after. It’s no surprise that the 35-year-old Parker continues to ply his trade for Fulham in the Championship to this day
