Harry Winks suffered what looks like a season-ending ankle injury, while the news is seemingly much better for Victor Wanyama.

Harry Winks injury update

Though still expecting a full update on Winks’ injury, the prognosis doesn’t look good as the young midfielder was taken off on a stretcher and rushed to hospital in the first half of yesterday’s win at Burnley.

Early unconfirmed reports suggest he’ll be out for the rest of the season.

It’s abject news for the 21-year-old Englishman, who is one of Mauricio Pochettino’s favourite options off the bench. He earned a rare start against Burnley and was one of the best players on the park before suffering the freak and wretched injury.

Let’s hope the scans are more promising than how the incident unfolded.

Victor Wanyama update

The initial news, if Spurs correspondents Dan Kilpatrick and Ben Pearce’s reports are anything to go by, is resoundingly better for Victor Wanyama.

Wanyama was withdrawn after taking many knocks to his lower back. Visibly discomforted and frustrated, the 25-year-old gestured to the bench, signifying the end of his afternoon.

This would be welcomed news if confirmed by the club, as Spurs have been recently crippled by the injury bug, with Danny Rose, Harry Kane and Erik Lamela – who will miss the rest of the season – all still sidelined.

How Spurs will lineup

It’s impossible to infer, at this embryonic stage, whether Wanyama will be fit for Tottenham’s trip to Swansea on Wednesday.

But providing Spurs err on the side of caution and Wanyama doesn’t start, one would expect Pochettino to stick with the 3-4-2-1 system that has brought his team so much success this season.

Eric Dier, who impressed against Burnley on Saturday, would most likely pair Mousa Dembele in the heart of Spurs defensive midfield.

Dier played chunks of the 2015-16 season in Wanyama’s current role, so this is the most seamless and logical solution.

Options on the bench, however, are becoming more sparse. Although deeper than previous seasons and more able to cope with a multitude of injuries, Spurs squad is being pushed to the brink.

Let’s hope this latest spate of injuries are the last, as Tottenham, in their relentless pursuit of Chelsea, can ill-afford additional personnel setbacks.
