Spurs continue to give contract extensions to core players and future stars to build a winning culture at White Hart Lane.

Following on the heels of Dele Alli, Mousa Dembélé and Josh Onomah’s contract extensions in recent weeks, plus Christian Eriksen set to get a new deal in the near future. Jan Vertonghen, will be the latest Spurs player to be rewarded according to the Daily Mail.

Because of the Belgian center-back’s great season this term, Spurs have taken the initiative to lock up one of their best central defenders in the squad and to keep the band together. The list of players that have signed new deals is at 12 players currently ever since Mauricio Pochettino was appointed as manager (not including pending contract extensions to Christian Eriksen and Jan Vertonghen).

To get that many players signed for multiple years after being known as a selling club in years past — before the arrival of Mauricio Pochettino — times sure have changed. The process of getting a long term deal is simple. Do well and you will be rewarded.

This is exactly why Jan Vertonghen, despite suffering a major injury to his mediate collateral ligament (MCL) on January 23rd, is getting rewarded for his hard work.

The 28-year-old has partnered up with his compatriot in Toby Alderweireld at central defense and has helped Spurs only concede a league-low 19 goals; the best in the Premier League.

With 156 appearances, nine goals and four assists in all competitions since arriving from Ajax in 2012 for £12 million, the Belgian international has officially cemented himself as Tottenham’s new leader at center-back and the entire backline after Ledley King was forced to retire prematurely due to knee injuries. And Michael Dawson was sold to Hull City because Pochettino wanted a more younger and fitter club to fit his image for Spurs.

Now because Spurs have only offered — or will soon offer — Jan Vertonghen a contract extension, terms of the deal haven’t been brought up. So it’s all speculation at this point in how much Vertonghen will earn and for how long will he stay.

However what is known is that Vertonghen’s current deal expires in 2018 and he’s earning £40,000-a-week.

Earning a significant pay raise, which the Daily Mail suggests will happen, could mean anything. But seeing Vertonghen potentially receive an increase of £20-30,000-a-week to his wages and adding two to three years wouldn’t be surprising.

Therefore a possible contract extension could look like this, a total of £60-70,000-a-week which will expire in 2020 or 2021, based on his contributions to a title challenge this season. Again, it’s speculation at this point, but these numbers don’t seem outrageous for a player who has been a key figure with Spurs since his arrival, so it’s well deserved for the 28-year-old defender.

Once Jan Vertonghen, and Christian Eriksen, sign contract extensions, they will be added to a growing list of established players and rising stars. Names that include the aforementioned Dele Alli, Mousa Dembélé and Josh Onomah, along with Hugo Lloris, Danny Rose, Ryan Mason, Harry Kane, Nabil Bentaleb, Harry Winks, Alex Pritchard, Eric Dier, and Connor Ogilvie who have already committed their futures with Spurs.

Mauricio Pochettino is currently overseeing a long term project where his young but competitive team will compete for silverware in future seasons starting with last year’s League Cup final appearance. And one major reason why is because Spurs are looking to be a club built on homegrown talent and key signings here and there.
