After getting a win in their first Europa League group stage match versus Qarabağ FK two weeks ago, Tottenham would be on the road against Monaco, a team who were in the Champions League last year reaching the quarter-finals against Juventus. Amoong Tottenham’s group, besides Qarabağ and Anderlecht, Monaco would be a tough challenge and it showed on Thursday night.

Due to Monaco’s European experience, especially in the Champions League, this match was going to be difficult to get points. After Stephen El Shaarawry’s 81st minute goal, salvaging a draw and one point feels more like a loss because Tottenham had the lead for half of the game after Érik Lamela’s 35th minute goal. On both ends, Tottenham and Monaco had plenty of chances to score, in Spurs’ case it was to score another goal to seal the win until they conceded one late.

Even with the draw, Spurs are still atop of Group J on four points, leading Qarabağ (3 points) by one point. Through two games, a 1W-1D-0L record is okay to have when Tottenham are in first place. It’s not necessarily ideal because Spurs could have gotten the full six points in two games, but getting a point on the road is huge, as Monaco have only lost once at home in European competitions.
