The first half was slow for Tottenham due to Christian Eriksen missing the game with a knee injury during training. Without their creative playmaker in the starting eleven, it fell into Érik Lamela’s hands (feet?) to help orchestrate the attack. It was good to see the 23-year-old Argentine winger get his first start this season, but to put him in that kind of situation was a failure to begin with.

As stated, Lamela is a winger by trade, not a number ten. Of course it’s easy to understand why Mauricio Pochettino decided to go this route. Alex Pritchard isn’t fully fit yet, and Érik Lamela creates chances as well as delivering key passes.

But with Lamela’s form being off to start the year and still trying to get in sync with his teammates, as he wasn’t a regular starter until it was close to the end of the 2014-15 season; splitting starts with Andros Townsend, it was to be expected that the game would be close when the final whistle blew.
