As important as striker and winger are, the midfield has a glaring hole.

For Tottenham to fix the middle of their formation, they could go at this in a number of ways. While Mousa Dembélé has been rumored as a target for Sunderland, nothing has happened on that front, thus the 28-year-old Belgian remains with the club. Veteran players like Dembélé are an option and something that the Argentine coach is looking at with a few targets.

In terms of youth, Mauricio Pochettino has a plethora to choose from, with an older youth player in 23-year-old Tom Carroll to as young as 18-year-old Joshua Onomah. Harry Winks (19), Dele Alli (19) and Alex Pritchard (21) are other options too.

Experience will be something that Mauricio Pochettino looks at, but if they’re running out of time, youth players would be the easiest choice to go with.

A few names rumored with Tottenham are James McCarthy, Thiago Motta, Josip Ilicic and Olivier Kemen. Motta and Kemen aren’t as heavily linked to the Lilywhites, but these two players represent intriguing options.

On to the first player, James McCarthy
