Tottenham have shown interest in signing Morgan Schneiderlin from Southampton throughout the summer. The Saints want Andros Townsend from Spurs. Can the clubs broker a transfer compromise?
Tottenham Transfer Targets
Morgan Schneiderlin, the Southampton and France international midfield player had been a target for Tottenham all summer. It is thought that Mauricio Pochettino sees him as the perfect fit for a central midfield role in his new Spurs team. Having worked with the player at Southampton, Pochettino is well aware of his capabilities and is eager for Spurs to complete the deal.
From Schneiderlin’s point of view he appears willing to follow his former coach to White Hart Lane and feels that Southampton have let him down by reneging on an agreement that he could have a transfer.
Southampton, having already sold 5 of their high profile players this summer, have rejected all offers from Spurs and refused to sell Schneiderlin. They have issued sternly worded statements insisting that the player will not be sold as he is central to the future plans on new manager Ronald Koeman.
Southampton Bid for Andros Townsend
In recent weeks Southampton have declared an interest in signing Tottenham’s England winger, Andros Townsend. According to ESPN they have made an offer for Townsend.
Andros Townsend had an exciting start to last season which say him break into the England team for their final qualifying matches. He was the star performer as England ensured qualification but from those highs, injury and lack of playing time with Spurs brought a disappointing end to the 2014-15 season. A late injury requiring surgery ended any hope of inclusion in the England squad for Brazil.
Determined to be ready for the start of this season under new manager Mauricio Pochettino, Townsend trained throughout the summer. It would appear, however, that he is not a player who the new Spurs manager sees as fitting into the style of play he envisages at White Hart Lane. He was a substitute at West Ham but made an impact when introduced for the final thirty minutes, bringing a greater urgency to the Tottenham play with his pace and direct running. He caused the West Ham defenders problems but had a less productive match in Cyprus in the Europa League. It was his replacement, Erik Lamela, who changed the game. Townsend was omitted from the match day squad for the win over QPR.
Townsend will want regular football this season which, at present, he doesn’t seem likely to get at White Hart Lane. A transfer to Southampton could be the catalyst to rekindle his career in the Premier League and with England.
Tottenham have rejected the offers from Southampton.
In the coming week as transfer negotiations reach fever pitch can Tottenham and Southampton do business? Will the two clubs be able to reach some sort of transfer compromise over Morgan Schneiderlin and Andros Townsend which will be acceptable to them and be of benefit to the two players?
A deal where Spurs give Southampton Andros Townsend plus cash for Morgan Schneiderlin seems to obvious compromise – if the clubs can reach agreement on sensible and acceptable valuations for the players.
Seven days and a few hours remain to the end of the transfer window. Will this be resolved?
