The transfer of Federico Fazio to Tottenham from Sevilla is thought to be imminent as Spurs have activated the release clause in the central defender’s contract.
Federico Fazio, the Sevilla central defender has become a target for Tottenham in recent days with the deal for Mateo Musacchio from Villarreal seemingly doomed. Tottenham are reported to have activated the €10m release clause in the Fazio’s contract.
The 27-year-old Argentine has two international caps. He is 6ft 5 in tall and has been with Sevilla since 2007, helping them to Europa League success last season.
Yesterday, the media in Spain, AS and Marca, were reporting that Federico Fazio had flown to London for talks. Sevilla were described as being “very angry” with the player.
With only days left to complete a signing, Tottenham have been forced into looking for an alternative to their first choice central defender.
After their past history with Sevilla, remember Juande Ramos, Tottenham’s and Daniel Levy’s relationship with the Spanish club is not good. It appears that the clubs have managed to reach an agreement with reports that a deal is close to completion.
Graeme Bailey of SkySports is reporting that Tottenham are hoping to get Federico Fazio’s medical completed this weekend.
The Sevilla manager, Unai Emery, has confirmed that Federico Fazio is to leave Sevilla and that he will not be in the squad for the next match. Hotspur Related (@HotspurRelated) tweeted the Sevillla manager’s comments,
Fazio has little or no chance to be with us tomorrow. Fazio’s departure makes us happy for him.
Emery praised Fazio’s contribution to the Sevilla team and queried the size of the fee.
He is one of the pillars of the team but we will just have to find another player to take his place. The release clause is too small but that’s football.
An assessment on Federico Fazio was given by Tor-Kristian Karlsen, a football adviser and writer. He tweeted,
He added in a following tweet,
Outstanding in the 2007 U20 WC, had to change his game somewhat following a serious injury a few years ago. Still interesting though.
Tottenham have been looking to add to their central defenders throughout the summer and with reports of renewed interest in Michael Dawson from Hull City and that Vlad Chiriches is set to join Roma, Spurs had to move quickly before the transfer deadline at the beginning of September.
Of course, we were led to believe that Mateo Musacchio would be signed within hours and that was weeks ago.
