In Tottenham’s on-going search for a central defender, a deadline appears to have been set for negotiations for the Villarreal defender, Mateo Musacchio.
Earlier in the month it appeared that it was only a mater of time before Tottenham would complete the signing of the Argentine and Villarreal central defender, Mateo Musacchio. Since then, however, wrangling between the Spanish club, Musacchio’s former club River Plate and his agent over their claims to a share of the transfer fee has prevented the completion of the deal.
Tottenham have waited patiently, in the hope that it would be resolved and so allow Mateo Musacchio to move to White Hart Lane.
With the close of the transfer window at the beginning of September, the deadline for the finalisation of a transfer appears to be the end of this week according to a report in the Daily Express. If a deal is not concluded in that time it will give Spurs time to look elsewhere to strengthen their back line.
Mateo Musacchio has continued to play for Villarreal and earlier this week the Spanish club’s manager commented that he was expecting a resolution to the matter and expressed confidence that the player would remain in Spain. Marcelino Garcia Toral said,
We expect a definitive solution for this week. I believe that Musacchio will stay with us but I cannot confirm this 100 per cent.
If this deal falls through as is looking increasingly likely, Tottenham will have to move quickly to fill an obvious gap in their squad.
Mauricio Pochetino will have been impressed by the early displays of Eric Dier who was signed from Sporting Lisbon just before the start of the season. He will, however, be anxious not to over use the England Under-21 defender in his early introduction to the Premier League.
With under a fortnight to the end of the transfer window, where will Tottenham turn to sign an experienced central defender to step into the team alongside Jan Vertonghen?
The answer to the question I posed could be found in a report by the Daily Express which suggests that Spurs, along with Manchester United, have revived interest in Aston Villa’s Ron Vlaar after the Southampton manager had admitted an interest in the Dutch international.
