Tottenham defeated West Ham 6 – 1 at Upton Park in the third game of the season. In the following day’s newspaper report, Sam Bartram wrote about the Tottenham team,

From Brown to Jones and all those household names of soccer in between, there wasn’t a weak link.

According to the report, Spurs would have had 12 if the West Ham goalkeeper, Laurie Lesley, hadn’t had ‘one of his  inspired days in the West Ham goal’.

Jimmy Greaves and Les Allen tormented West Ham, and even though Allen was the only Spurs forward not to score, he made two of the goals.

The report commented that, ‘well though Allen played, he was eclipsed by the incredible effervescent Jimmy Greaves. This was one of his best matches – perhaps his best ever.’

Spurs went ahead after 11 minutes through an own goal from a cross by Allen. Three minutes later, Terry Medwin scored the second. In the second half Jimmy Greaves added two more before Cliff Jones and John White made it six. West Ham scored a late consolation goal.
