Steffen Freund – Promotion?

Spurs’ official site made much of the fact that Steffen Freund has been given the new role as Tottenham’s International Technical Coordinator. It almost sounds like a promotion.

The Sun, on the other hand sees it differently. It says that with this move Mauricio Pochettino has completed his coaching clear-out by side-lining Freund. It says that by thus removing Steffen Freund from the dugout he will go into the new season with all of his coaches from Southampton around him. Assistant head coach Jesus Perez, 1st team coach Miguel D’Agostino and goalkeeping coach Toni Jimenez.

No real new Tottenham news, just more transfer rumours but it’s good to see Mauricio Pochettino speaking English in his interview on Sky. ITV announce Saturday’s friendly against Schalke will be live on ITV4.

Tottenham Win Over Schalke

Watched the Schalke friendly on ITV4. Emmanuel Adebayor took his goal well. Roberto Soldado scooped any easy chance wide after having it set up on a plate by Andros Townsend in the 52nd minute. Then in 56th minute Townsend misses an easy chance himself, having drifted out to the right and already done the hard work with a great first touch to get in on goal.

Don’t get to see the 2nd half until midnight when I return from a blues workshop and jam at the Wimborne guitar festival…….

New signing Eric Dier doing well in central defence. Soldado scores! Reacts well to adjust his position quickly and cushion a header into the net as a parried Townsend shot flies at his head.

Before we had adjusted to a couple of substitutions, Kevin Prince Boateng (typical, who else would it be?) scuffs in an equaliser past Lloris in the 80th minute.

Late on Soldado gets his feet tied up running in on goal and over runs the ball, leaving it behind him. Sadly, he still seems to be the footballing equivalent of “all fingers and thumbs”. Come on Roberto, we are all really rooting for you.

In the 90th minute their goalie makes a great double save from Townsend and Cristian Cebellas. Soldado was clean through but Harry Kane threaded a more difficult ball to Townsend, as if he didn’t trust Soldado not to c*ck it up again.

Final whistle. Spurs won 2-1. West Ham here we come.
