Nacer Chadli and Younes Kaboul could be on their way out of Tottenham as Spurs look to reduce the size of their squad ahead of the new season.
Tottenham have been associated with many possible transfer deals this summer. Spurs have targeted the French midfielder Morgan Schneiderlin from Southampton but have had an offer rejected and been been thwarted by Southampton’s insistence that no more players will be sold. Spurs, however, remain, determined to complete a deal with Schneidelin having made it clear that he wants to follow Mauricio Pochettino to White Hart Lane. As part of Tottenham’s bargaining power, the Sun has reported that Tottenham are planning to offer Nacer Chadli to Southampton in a new deal.
If a deal for Schneiderlin was agreed, including Nacer Chadli, it would make the Belgium international the first of Tottenham’s 7 signings from last season to leave the club.
Nacer Chadli has only returned to training following his participation in the World Cup Finals in Brazil so has had no opportunity to impress Mouricio Pochettino. While Tottenham may be prepared to sell Chadli, it could be difficult to persuade him that a move to Southampton is in his best interests. With the turmoil at Southampton this summer, Chadli may prefer to remain at Tottenham or make a return move to Holland or another European league.
The expected arrival of the Argentine central defender, Mateo Muscacchio from Villarreal, and the signing of Eric Dier, means that Tottenham may be prepared to release some of their central defenders. Michael Dawson has been the subject of transfer speculation and negotiations throughout the summer.
Injury concerns with Younes Kaboul have been an issue over the past two seasons but it had been thought that he would be retained as cover to the expected first choice central defensive partnership of Jan Vertonghen and Musacchio, if that transfer can be completed with Villarreal.
There are reports in the London Evening Standard, however, that Lazio are interested in Kaboul with the two clubs in negotiation over a fee. Tottenham are thought to want £6m for Younes Kaboul but Lazio have offered £4.8m and are prepared to wait until nearer the close of the transfer window.
Tottenham have an over-sized squad and with the club looking to sign additional players they need to move some players on. While Nacer Chadli and Younes Kaboul, if they remained at the club, could do a job for Spurs this season, if other clubs show an interest in signing them, then Spurs may well be prepared to sell.
