Mateo Musacchio has been linked with Tottenham in reports over the past number of days. There is growing speculation that the central defender could be on his way to Spurs.
Tottenham have been looking to strengthen their defence this summer and have already taken steps to do so by signing Ben Davies and Eric Dier. Now in a report in the Daily Express Spurs are being linked with a move for Mateo Musacchio, a central defender from Villarreal. The 23-year-old has been playing in Spain since 2009 when he moved from River Plate in Argentina. He has made 139 league appearances for the Spanish club after a season with Villarreal B and has won two international caps for Argentina.
Sergi Domínguez (@FutbolSergi) a journalist who focuses on Spanish football has tweeted that Spurs are “in advanced talks with Villarreal regarding Musacchio”. He describes Musaccho as a fantastic central defender who is still only 23 and a proficient tackler who provides optimal solidity.
Like many Spurs fans, I know nothing about this defender but comments from those who have seen him play regularly in Spain make Musacchio who has also attracted the attention of Barcelona this summer, appear to be a good acquisition.
Spurspanyol (@Spurspanyol), a Valencia-based Spurs fan has tweeted in very positive terms about the central defender. He commented,
Musacchio reminds me a lot of Kaboul. He’s big, strong and one of the best tacklers in La Liga. Comfortable on the ball, too. However, like Kaboul, Musacchio is prone to the odd unforced error. He’s still learning his trade but is definitely talented.
He also tweeted that the media in Spain are suggesting that Tottenham are looking at Mateo Musacchio as a replacement for Jan Vertonghen. This is also the suggestion in the Express article but the view at Tottenham is that as a right-sided defender, they want him to play alongside Vertonghen.
On the Barcelona link, @Spurspanyol tweeted,
AS claim that Vertonghen could still end up at Barcelona IF Tottenham sign Musacchio from Villarreal. Even if we did sign Musa, Vert stays.

The Mirror are reporting that Tottenham are in negotiations with Villarreal and their reporter, Darren Lewis Darren Lewis has tweeted that Vertonghen is to get a new contract.
The transfer fee is open to discussion with suggestions, according to the Mirror, that Villarreal want £20m as River Plate have to receive 35 per cent of the fee. Spurs are thought to be offering £16m.

Mauricio Pochettino is clearly looking to add to his defenders before the start of the season. He has already brought in left-back Ben Davies from Swansea City and England Under-21 central defender Eric Dier from Sporting Lisbon.
After last season’s difficulties in defence both in performance and in lack of cover, the signings so far are a positive start to remedying some of last year’s short-comings.
