Tottenham are reported to be close to completing a deal for transfer of the Southampton pair of Morgan Schneiderlin and Jay Rodriquez.
The Southampton duo have been linked with Tottenham throughout the summer along with many other players. The most recent reports, including from BBC Sport, have expressed confidence that Spurs are about to sign midfielder Morgan Schneiderlin and forward Jay Rodriguez with an announcement expected soon.
Pochettino, Morgan Schneiderlein and Jay Rodriguez
Mauricio Pochettino knows Morgan Schneiderlin and Jay Rodriguez well with both having made good progress under his tutelage during his 16 months at Southampton. Both players are 24 years of age and have made their full international debuts in the past year. Schneiderlin received a late call up for the France World Cup squad and made his debut in a pre-tournament friendly before playing in the group match against Ecuador. But for injury, Rodriguez would have been a contender for Roy Hodgson’s England squad after making his first appearance last November.
Schneiderlin has appeared keen to follow Pochettino to White Hart Lane and made complimentary remarks about his former manager in the media last week.
He was reported to be a target for Arsenal and the Saints tried to dissuade interested clubs by putting a £27m transfer fee on the French international. Schneiderlin, however, has expressed a desire to leave and appears to prefer a move to Tottenham with Spurs reported to be in negotiation with Southampton over the fee.
Jay Rodriguez joined Southampton from Burnley in 2012 and had two very positive seasons at the St. Mary’s Stadium. Last season, prior to his injury in April, he played 39 games and scored 17 goals. His injury makes the possible signing a huge gamble for Tottenham. Although Rodriguez has started light training, he is not expected to return to fitness from his anterior cruciate ligament injury until October at the earliest.
Liverpool, having pulled out of a deal for Loic Remy, are thought to be interested in Rodriguez but reports are suggesting that Tottenham and Southampton are in negotiations over the double signing, with according to the Guardian, personal terms having been agreed.
If Tottenham complete the double signing of Morgan Schneiderlin and Jay Rodriguez, it would be a huge sign that Daniel Levy is prepared to back his new manager. That is not something that has always happened at Spurs but signing two players that Pochettino knows well should help the new coach establish the style of team he envisages at White Hart Lane.
