Tottenham have been looking to strengthen in central defence this summer. One of the most recent targets is Ron Vlaar, the Aston Villa and Holland defender.
Ron Vlaar has had two seasons in English football since joining Aston Villa from Feyenoord in the summer of 2012. The Dutch international defender impressed at the World Cup Finals in Brazil and he is reported to be a target for Tottenham.
Mauricio Pochettino is looking to recruit a central defender to strengthen an area where Tottenham were severely stretched last season. Injuries though the season forced Spurs to use midfielders Sandro and Etienne Capoue in the centre of their defence and with doubts over the future of a number of players at White Hart Lane, Spurs are in need of a new signing, or two.
The two pre-season games on Tottenham’s tour of North America have clearly illustrated Spurs’ lack of depth in central defence. Michael Dawson who has been linked with a move away from Spurs hasn’t looked comfortable in either match. Younes Kaboul improved in the match against Toronto but there are doubts over his fitness while Vlad Chiriches who pulled out of the tour with a back injury has been drawing interest from Roma according to a report in the Mirror. Ciriches is thought to be unsettled in England and would be keen on a move to Italy. Jan Vertonghen is still to return to training following the World Cup but he is reported to be a target for Barcelona although Tottenham insist that Vertonghen will not be leaving this summer.
Ron Vlaar at 29-years-of-age is an experienced defender with 31 appearances for Holland. He is the captain of Aston Villa where he has made over 50 appearances in the past two seasons. He spent 6 years at Feyenoord but was out for almost two seasons with serious injuries.
Vlaar played in all of Holland’s games in Brazil and was an outstanding performer. Unfortunately, his World Cup will be remembered by some for his missed penalty in the shoot-out in the semi-final defeat by Argentina.
While Tottenham may be interested in Vlaar, so are other clubs, including his former Holland coach, Louis van Gaal at Manchester United, Queen’s park Rangers and Southampton. More importantly Aston Villa have no desire to sell Vlaar.
Paul Lambert proved himself to be a very determined manager last summer when Tottenham looked set to sign Christian Bentake. According to media reports Benteke was on his way from Villa Park to White Hart Lane but at the last minute Lambert persuaded the Belgian striker to remain with Villa. Lambert has no wish to sell Ron Vlaar as he said in comments reported by the Guardian,
Ron’s not only an Aston Villa player, he’s our captain. We aren’t selling. It’s as simple as that.
If Tottenham were to sign Ron Vlaar, he would bring stability to a defence which was very uncertain last season. Tottenham are thought to be offering Michael Dawson and Lewis Holtby as players in part-exchange but it will take a very good deal to overcome the interest of other clubs and persuade Aston Vila to release their captain.
