Mauricio Pochettino On First Week Of Training At Tottenham

The Tottenham players returned for pre-season training last Friday. Mauricio Pochettino gave his thoughts on the first week of training at Tottenham.

The Tottenham players who had not been at the World Cup in Brazil returned for pre-season training a week ago. The first day was spent in the gym and then through the week it was a mixture of gym work, running and football drills as the players build up for the start of the new season in mid-August.

With this work behind them they will be heading off during the coming week on the first leg of their pre-season tour in the United States. Their first match will be on Saturday against Seattle Sounders.

Mauricio Pochettino expressed satisfaction on the first week’s work at the Hotspur Way training ground. Speaking to the Tottenham club web-site, the Head Coach said,

We are very happy with the players and we’ve enjoyed the training. The players have responded well and have trained hard every day.

In his first week on the training ground, Pochettino stressed the importance of getting to know the players and ensuring they understand the philosophy and style of the new regime. He commented,

It’s important for the players to get to know us and for us to get to know them and at the same time we’ve also started to introduce our philosophy and style into the group.

He said that it is a difficult time for the players as they have to work hard but that there was a good atmosphere among the group.

From photographs on the club’s Twitter account and the web-site it was clear that Pochettino was taking part in the training runs with the players while during the week some of the Academy players were also involved with the senior players.

Players’ Thoughts

Zeki Fryers and goalkeeper Jordan Archer gave their thoughts on the early training sessions during the week. On the club site Fryers said,

Training’s going well, it’s been good and I like the set-up. It’s been hard, sharp, but that’s positive. Pre-season is always hard but all the lads are doing well.

Like all players, Zeki Fryers is going through the pain and effort of pre-season for one thing, to get to the matches. He said,

I can’t wait for the games to come – hopefully I’ll feature in some. We’ll just have to see how things go.

Jordan Archer commenting on the return to training said,

It’s been hard work in training. Obviously we’ve got new staff and they’ve been good – everyone likes them. They’re working us hard so we know we’re going to be ready for the start of the season.

Looking forward to the three games in the US and Canada, Archer said on the club’s web-site,

They’ve been playing for a while now so they’ll be up to speed. We’re obviously in pre-season but they’ll be firing and ready to go at us. The football is always improving over there so you know it will be good for us to play against those three teams.

Tottenham’s three games are:

19th July: v Seattle Sounders

23rd July: v Toronto FC

26th July: v Chicago Fire

Looking forward to some games. But you can do well in pre-season and then start the League poorly, and vice versa, so best not to read too much into the tour games. Think Sky/BT have been waiting for the WC to end before announcing their selections, so this week should see our revised fixture list for the first months.

It’ll be interesting to see who’s figuring in MP’s plans. Pre-season games can sometimes give false hope or gloom and doom.

Expecting the TV games to be announced early next week but we already know first two home games will be on a Sunday due to EL. Being selfish I wouldn’t mind a Monday match to give me a chance to get to one of them.
