Tottenham’s hopes of signing central defender, Dejan Lovren from Southampton would appear to have been dealt a severe blow by comments from the player.
Throughout the summer there have been continuing reports of Tottenham’s interest in signing Dejan Lovren from Southampton. This is despite Southampton’s unwillingness to lose a fourth player following the departure of Luke Shaw to Manchester United, and Ricky Lambert and Adam Lallana to Liverpool. The Saints are also reported to have also turned down a bid from Liverpool for the Croatian defender who appears to be determined to push through his move away from the St. Mary’s Stadium.
Spurs attempts to re-unite Lovren with Mauricio Pochettino were expected to take a step up this week according to a report in the Sunday Mirror. They were preparing to make an offer for Lovren who joined Southampton from Lyon a year ago.
An update from the BBC Sport, however, could dash Tottenham’s ambitions of signing Lovren as they report comments from Lovren made to the Croatian paper Sportske Novosti. Lovren spoke of his desire to move to Liverpool as he was upset at Southampton’s handling of the transfer, saying his, “head is already at Liverpool”.
Angered that he had not been told of Liverpool’s offers by Southampton, Lovren said,
Liverpool sent the offer and the club haven’t informed me. Not even about the subsequent Liverpool bids. That wasn’t right.
Lovren had previously spoken of wanting to play for a team in the Champions League so with the comments from the central defender favouring a move to Anfield, Tottenham may find it difficult to persuade Lovren to consider a move to White Hart Lane.
Tottenham had been hoping that with Mauricio Pochettino having worked with Dejan Lovren last season that they would be able to persuade him to link up with his former manager at Spurs. That would seem to be an unlikely scenario according to the most recent reports.
