The point that England earned meant they avoided the ignominy of returning home pointless. Who did you think was the England Man of the Match? The point for Costa Rica sent them into the last-16 as winners of Group D ahead of Uruguay who defeated Italy to claim second place. Italy and England exit the World Cup at the first stage.
For their final game of the 2014 World Cup, England returned to Belo Horizonte, the scene of their greatest shock in the World Cup Finals, a 1 – 0 defeat to the USA in 1950. With nothing to play for in this match, Roy Hodgson, used the game as an opportunity for the young players to gain experience and a reward for squad players who had been totally committed to training over the past weeks. His team against Costa Rica included only two of the players who started against Uruguay – Gary Cahill and Daniel Sturridge.
Costa Rica after two wins opened the brighter and had an early shot blocked by Gary Cahill. England gradually improved and Sturridge had the best of teh chances for England but he was unable to find his scoring touch. Ben Foster had a comfortable game in goal, commanding his area well and making a good save to deny Costa Rica at a free-kick, tipping the shot onto the bar. In a low key game, neither team’s final pass was good enough to open up the opposition’s defence.
Roy Hodgson speaking after the match to BBC Sport was satisfied with the performance saying,
Apart from first the 10 to 12 minutes, we dominated totally. We didn’t take our goal chances – if we did we would have comfortably won. We created the chances and that’s important.
