The final review of the 2013-14 season sought fans’ views on whether they preferred Tottenham to qualify for the Champions League or win a trophy.
Every season the big debate among fans is whether Tottenham should concentrate on securing a top-4 finish in the Premier League with Champions League qualification or attempt to win one of the Cup competitions.
HotspurHQ’s survey posed the following question with two options:
Q. 10 Which would you prefer?
- Tottenham to finish in the top-4 but without a trophy
- Tottenham to finish outside the top-4 but with a trophy
Champions League Focus
For many supporters, a regular top-4 finish in the Premier League is the number one goal at the start of every season. With guaranteed Champions League football this is seen as the way to retain our top players and secure the transfer of the main transfer targets.
Many of these supporters would prefer Spurs to miss out on the Europa League and avoid the distraction of Thursday evening football throughout the season.
If Spurs must play in the Europa League then they would quite happily send out the squad players and youth team to save the first choice eleven for the Premier League matches the following weekend. When it comes to the domestic cups, they have no problem with an understrength team being played and hope for an early exit from the competition.
Through this past season, Liverpool have been held up as an example of how this can prove very successful for the club.
Trophy – Glory Hunters
For other supporters, they want Tottenham to compete in every competition they enter and find it distasteful to see a young team being sent out without any hope of winning. These fans remember days at Wembley and the tales they have to tell of being there to watch a Spurs triumph as they did in the Carling Cup of 2008. Older supporters recall exciting nights at the Lane as Spurs progressed on another successful Cup campaign in the 1970s and 1980s. For some, they are able to recall the “Glory, Glory Nights” of the 1960s and the heroic deeds of players like Dave Mackay, Danny Blanchflower, Cliff Jones and Jimmy Greaves.
In the survey, who triumphed?
Top-4 Champions League Finish (no trophy): 65%
Outside Top-4 but Trophy Success: 35%
In the incoming season, both sides of the argument would be satisfied if Tottenham were to win the Europa League as the successful team will have automatic qualification for the Champions League in the 2015-16 season. Here’s hoping!
