Which of the 32 teams will win the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil? Which nation will reign supreme and lift the trophy after over four weeks of competition on Sunday, 13th July?
When looking for the winner of the 2014 World Cup, there are only a small number of countries to be taken into consideration as potential winners.
The climatic conditions are against European teams who have never won the trophy in South America. In fact, Spain’s success in South Africa in 2010 was the first win by a European country outside of Europe. As holders, Spain would become only the third country to retain the trophy, a feat achieved by Italy in 1938 who had won it four years earlier and Brazil who won it in 1958 and 1962.
As World and European champions will Spain be able to retain their trophy? They played in the Confederations Cup in Brazil last summer and reached the Final but lost to the host nation who will again be strong favourites to lift the trophy.
While the venue might be against European teams, the pressure on Brazil as the host nation are intense. The whole country expects them to win the trophy for the 6th time and the past four years has been devoted to preparing the team for the Finals. The last host nation to win the World Cup was France in 1998.
Other South American countries will be keen to take advantage of playing in the southern continent – Argentina were winners in 1978 on home soil and again in Mexico in 1986. Uruguay, if Luis Suarez is fit, will prove difficult opposition for England in the group stages.
Of the European teams, Germany are always contenders and there are high expectations for Belgium. Can England win the trophy? Unlikely.
African countries have come more to the fore in recent competitions but can one of them make that step to challenge in the latter stages? The Ivory Coast with its team of highly experienced players who have won the top honours with clubs across Europe know that this is the last opportunity for many of their senior players. Can they surprise everyone and go all the way?
