Tottenham Transfer Targets: Ben Davies, Adam Lallana, Mehdi Benatia

Today’s transfer news links Tottenham with Ben Davies, the Swansea City left back, Adam Lallana from Southampton and Mehdi Benatia a defender with Roma.

Ben Davies

One of Tottenham’s problem areas for the past few seasons has been at left back where Benoit Assou-Ekotto and Danny Rose have failed to impress and where due to injury Jan Vertonghen has had to fill in reluctantly over the past two seasons. Last season Andre Villas-Boas opted for Danny Rose as his first choice left back but he was out for a lengthy period with injury.

Tottenham have been following the progress of Ben Davies at Swansea City and could be considering a move to sign him if Mauricio Pochettino gives his approval, according to the Mail Online. The Wales international is 21 years of age and came through the Swansea youth Academy, breaking into the team at the start of the 2012-13 season. He has been a regular since then, making 84 appearances in all competitions and was a member of their League Cup winning team in his first season. He has made 10 international appearances for Wales.

Ben Davies would be a good signing for Spurs – he is a young player who has gained considerable experience with Swansea in his two seasons in the first team including playing in European games last year. He is a player who could help resolve the problem Spurs have had at left back for too long.

Adam Lallana

Tottenham have been linked with a number of Southampton players since appointing Mauricio Pochettino as manager. Adam Lallana is a major target for Liverpool who have already signed Ricky Lambert but the Mirror are suggesting that the former Southampton manager’s relationship with Lallana could persuade the England international midfield player to link up with him at White Hart Lane.

With Southampton likely to lose a number of players, there is the suggestion that Andros Townsend could move to St. Mary’s as part of the deal. Townsend’s season stalled at Spurs in 2014 after an exciting breakthrough to the Premier League while on loan at Queen’s Park Rangers and then making his England debut on his return to White Hart Lane at the start of last season.

Mehdi Benatia

The Metro

are reporting interest from Tottenham and Chelsea in Roma’s central defender, Mehdi Benatia. The Moroccan central defender is 27 years of age and has made 31 international appearances. This would appear to be an unlikely signing for Spurs as Roma clearly have no intention of selling and have suggested that it would require a fee of £50m to persuade them to sell him.

Departures from the Lane

The Mirror report also suggests that a number of players could be leaving Spurs which would provide Pochettino with transfer funds to bring in players that he has identified.

More from Tottenham News

Nacer Chadli, Gylfi Sigurdsson, Lewis Holtby and Michael Dawson are regarded as surplus to requirements at Tottenham with the possibility of both Hugo Lloris and Roberto Soldado being sold for substantial fees and there are doubts over the future of Jan Vertonghen, Etiene Capoue and Paulinho. Any sales which would allow Pochettino to target another Southampton player, central defender Dejan Lovren.

Doubts over the future of players like Lloris, Vertonghen and Paulinho would be a concern for Tottenham fans, as it would bring a complete overhaul of the team and the associated problem of new players requiring time to adjust as we discovered to our cost last season.

Vlad Chiriches

There have been comments from Chiriches’ agent which raise doubts about the Romanian central defender’s future with Tottenham. In the Italian press TMW have reported his remarks which suggest that Chiriches could leave Totenham and move to Fiorentina.

"I believe he will not remain in England. I think he will go to Fiorentina."

The comments are linked to a possible interest by Tottenham in the Fiorentina and former Manchester City defender Stefan Savic with Spurs prepared to use Chiriches as part of the deal.

Whatever happens over the summer, we can expect a number of changes to the Tottenham team by the start of the new season as Pochettino puts his mark on the club. We can also expect ten times more rumours of who will arrive and who will leave White Hart Lane.
