The news about Tottenham in today’s papers adds another possible candidate for the manager’s seat at White Hart Lane, Roberto Martinez being linked with the position.
Tottenham are keeping an open mind as they consider their options over the managerial situation at White Hart Lane for next season. With Tim Sherwood still in post, numerous names have been linked with the club.
Last week, it was Frank de Boer, the Ajax manager, who was reported to be under consideration. At the weekend, the Southampton manager, Mauricio Pochettino was again named in the press as a possible option with Rafa Benitez, who has just won the Cup in Italy with Napoli, thought to be interested.
This morning, the Daily Star have named Roberto Martinez as a possible contender to replace Tim Sherwood, should he be sacked. The Everton manager has impressed this season at Goodison Park with the style of play that has taken Everton to a position where they were serious challengers for a Champions League place. It has only been a recent dip in form which has seen them drop behind Arsenal.
Whether Martinez would come is another matter. He was very loyal to Wigan and remained with the club even when given the opportunity to leave. Would he be prepared to leave Goodison Park after only a season? He has a Chairman at Everton, Bill Kenwright, who is supportive of his managers and may show greater patience in difficult times than managers tend to get from Daniel Levy at Spurs. That may make Martinez reluctant to leave Goodison although their lack of funds for transfers may be a concern for him.
Martinez has always been held in high regard at his previous clubs. His reputation developed with Swansea and even at Wigan Athletic where they were involved in late escapes from relegation before finally going down at the end of last season. They did, however, have the excitement of a memorable FA Cup success to comfort them as they dropped into the Championship. His standing has increased with the impressive season Everton have enjoyed but White Hart Lane might be regarded as a risky move for someone who is frequently linked with top posts in Spain as managers rarely get time to carry through their plans at Spurs.
With Martinez having only been at Everton for a year of his 4-year contract, it could prove costly for Tottenham to extricate him from that deal as the Merseyside club won’t want to lose their manager for a second successive summer, even if David Moyes is there as a possible replacement.
The Daily Express are reporting that Cristian Tello a young forward with Barcelona has told the club that he wants to leave the Nou Camp if Gerardo Martino remains as coach. The 22-year-old is concerned about his lack of playing time, having made 29 appearances for Barcelona this season, scoring 5 goals. He broke into the Barca team in 2011 and will be of interest to Tottenham with Liverpool and Arsenal also thought to be keen on signing him. Other clubs across Europe are watching developments. Tello played in the Spain team at the London Olympics and made one appearance for the senior national team in 2013.
The Daily Star have reported that Liverpool and Tottenham are interested in signing the young Lazio midfield player Ogenyi Onazi. The 21-year-old could cost £10m and has made 51 league appearances since coming into the Lazio team in 2012. He was born in Nigeria and has made 18 international appearances.
