The latest news about Tottenham from the weekend papers, with speculation on the future of Andros Townsend and the possible appointment of Mauricio Pochettino as Spurs manager.
Andros TownsendAndros Townsend has had a difficult season at Tottenham following his successful introduction into the England team last autumn. He has been unable to produce the same sparkling form which at the time made him a ‘certainty’ to be included in the England squad for the World Cup Finals in Brazil this summer. After a disappointing season when injury restricted his opportunity to play for Spurs, he then found himself sidelined with only occasional brief appearances from the bench, and finally injury and surgery have ended his World Cup ambitions.
Now, comes the news in a report in the Sunday Mirror suggesting that Tottenham are prepared to sell him as part of a clear out of players during this summer’s transfer window, with a suggestion of a move to Southampton. According to the report Spurs had been prepared to offer the winger as part of a deal for Adam Lallana but he is thought to be heading to Liverpool. Southampton, however, could still be interested in Townsend.
Two other players that Tottenham are prepared to sell are Glyfi Siggurdsson who signed two years ago and Nacer Chadli who came in last season as one of the 7 players signed when Gareth Bale moved to Real Madrid.
Continuing the Southampton theme, the Tottenham Chairman, Daniel Levy, is thought to be considering a move for, Mauricio Pochettino, the manager of the south coast club. The Mail on Sunday are reporting that Southampton’s Argentine manager could be a candidate to take over from Tim Sherwood.
Ponchettino has impressed in 18 months at Southampton with his team playing an attractive style of football. Concerns about his use of a translator at press conferences have been set aside as he can communicate in English but prefers to use the translator.
The Ajax manager, Frank de Boer, may have harmed his chances by speaking publicly about an approach by Tottenham which Spurs denied in a statement during the week but Rafa Benitez could also come into consideration.Paulinho
Following on from the story earlier in the week in which Chelsea were linked with Paulinho, they may have rivals for Tottenham’s Brazilian midfield player. In a report in the London Evening Standard, Real Madrid and AC Milan are thought to be interested in signing Paulinho. According to the report, Chelsea remain favourites with Paulinho who is represented by the same agent as the three Brazilian stars, Oscar, David Luis and Ramires, who already at Stamford Bridge.
Real Madrid and AC Milan have been monitoring Paulinho’s situation at Spurs where he was out of the team for a period of time at the start of the year when he was unable to regain his place in the team following injury. He has also been critical in the press of the Spurs manager, Tim Sherwood.
According to the Daily Mail:
Iago Falque who has spent the season on loan with Rayo Vallecano wants to remain with them next season and make the move permanent. Falque has had very limited opportunities since joining Tottenham from Barcelona in 2011. He has started only 4 games for Spurs in the League Cup and Europa League with another 7 substitute apperances but only 1 has been in the Premier League.
